Euphemistic Language

euphemistic language is the expression towards negative issues in polite form in order not to offend peoples. The purpose of the substitution may also be to avoid revealing secret or sacred names to the uninitiated, or to obscure the identity of the subject of a conversation from potential eavesdroppers. Some euphemisms are intended to amuse. usually, mass media is the main user of this language because they facing with public. there are lots of euphemistic language we use everyday. during our class with sir mark, he use video from George Carlin to shows us what is euphemistic language is all about. in his video, he tell his audience the disadvantages of euphemistic language. instead of that, there are some opinion about euphemistic language. according to Noam Chomsky, euphemistic language is the words change but the meaning stay the same and someone will reveal his own perspective/ideology when speak.h According to Micheal Foucoult, he thinks that we should use honest and direct language. he thought that the words may be the same but the meaning may not change. there are some example of euphemistic language we always practice in our daily life.

  • died : passed away
  • toilet : washroom
  • bitch : lady of the evening
  • boulder holder : bra
  • shell shock -Battle fatigue-operational exhaustion-pause commeticstress disorder.
